Paul Adams Listening Theme: THE ROLLING STONES

I’ve spent a fair bit of time listening to the Beatles lately so I thought it was about time I covered The Rolling Stones.

This will include Stones studio albums (I’ve always been more of a Beatles fan and have to admit that I’ll be listening to most of these albums for the first time!), live albums, solo or collaboration albums. When you come to think of it, there’s plenty to listen to here. I will also be including covers of Rolling Stones tracks by other artists.

So let’s have your recommendations as to what you think I should listen to over the next couple of weeks.

My playlist for this and past themes can be found here:

  • Like Mr Hickman noted on Facebook, I have that same Beggars vs Exile race always running, but you know… has any album started as powerfully as LET IT BLEED with Gimme Shelter, strolled as sassy as Live With Me and ended with the raggedy grace of You Can’t Always Get What You Want ? Add in the great spinning cake/bike tire/record thang…today I am going with LET IT BLEED.

  • I’m a fan of the sad song and brother, it doesn’t get much better than Mick moaning some blues on Sticky Fingers. The last four tracks (I got the Blue, Dead Flowers, Sister Morphine, Moonlight Mile) hold their own against anything.

That being said, I’m falling in love with Let it Bleed as I type this…I love their cover of Love in Vain. And Chris, can’t forget You Can’t Always Get What You Want.

  • Let It Bleed is usually not folk’s first choice but many come around to it as 9 songs that really sit well together

HI PAUL! ALBUMS: AFTERMATH (1966): IT INCLUDES “PAINT IT BLACK”. ENUFF SAID.

BETWEEN THE BUTTONS (1967): THE MOST ENGLISH STONES ALBUM OF ALL TIME, SORT OF THE KINKS ON SPEED. BIG TRACK: “RUBY TUESDAY”.

FLOWERS (1967): A COMPILATION OF TUNES HEARD ON ENGLISH ALBUMS RELEASED IN AMERICA.

BEGGARS BANQUET (1968): THE STONES LEAVE PSYCHEDELIA AND RETURN TO THE ROOTS AND BUILD OUT MORE. “SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL” AND “STREET FIGHTING MAN”.

LET IT BLEED (1969): THE ALBUM AFTER “HONKY TONK WOMEN” SINGLE. “GIMME SHELTER”.

STICKY FINGERS (1971): THE GREATEST PROBABLY. “BROWN SUGAR” KICKS IT OFF.

EXILE ON MAIN STREET (1972): FUNKY, FUNKY, FUNKY.

SOME GIRLS (1978): BEST ALBUM WITH RONNIE WOOD. “MISS YOU” IS THE HIT.

TATTOO YOU (1981): LAST GREAT STONES ALBUM. “START ME UP” IS THE HIT.

Thanks everyone for your input. After a morning of back to back Stones (Beggars Banquet, Exile On Main Street, Let It Bleed, Goats Head Soup and Sticky Fingers) I have to agree Let It Bleed is pretty damn good and my favourite (so far) with Beggars Banquet a very close second. I also liked Goats Head Soup (Angie is a timeless classic).
This afternoon I think I’ll have a change of pace and take a listen to Charlie Watts & The Tentet “Watts At Scott’s” http://bit.ly/bvIneE

    Paul:

Thank goodness for Charlie Watts and his commitment to jazz and swinging drums. His love of jazz affects The Stones in one very specific technique: He always pulls up on the high hat when he hits the snare. 3 taps and a whap! That empty high hat space pushes the beat forward and creates that unique Stones sound. It lifts the music like old swinging Chuck Berry rock, but is its own propulsion. So thank Charlie and thank jazz music too.

CHARLIE WATTS IS THE KING OF THE “UNDERSTATED’ DRUMMERS IN ROCK MUSIC. RINGO IS ANOTHER!

This morning I’ve been listening to a few cover versions (some good, some not). Head over to http://paul-adams.livejournal.com for my playlist so far. Know of any good ones? or bad ones come to that, I’m not fussy, I’ll listen to anything!

  • My favorite cover of all time:

Townes Van Zandt – Dead Flowers

You can just watch The Big Lebowski and then crank it during the credits!

  • Ron Wood’s Now Look is a great, earthy rock album…with I Got Lost When I Found You and Breathe on Me… He was so much better before he joined The Stones, an excellent songwriter. Mick and Keith could have used his material and had much stronger albums for about the last 20 years…

  • Another cover track to think about is Angie by Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics. Kelly has that voice that can cover anything.

Kelly does a version of Nirvana’s Something in the Way that gives Kurt a run for his money.

  • Linda Ronstadt does a great cover of “Tumbling Dice” on the FM soundtrack.

  • Will post The Conditionz version of Dead Flowers on the player… Bob Nye is a rock nut
